Magic
Here's my new piumino magico in all it's glory. It says it's magic on the packet. It's actually my first piumino magico too. I'm not sure if this is a sign of age...Or a need to fit in with Italian cleaning standards. Boh.
When I went to buy it I had no idea how to say feather duster in Italian so I went into the detersivi-bits-and-bobs shop, hoping I'd be able to see one and point it out before the signore yelled "prego?" to ask me what I wanted. Then I'd have been in the difficult position of having to describe a feather duster, with the help of gestures and a bit of miming thrown in. Think charades in the detersivi-bits-and-bobs shop.
This is why the big shops are so much easier to shop in - no speaking necessary when looking for those items which they never taught you to say in Italian class. Anyway, there were two varieties, one only 80 cents and one, more professional version that was 4 euro. Of course I put my cheap skates on and opted for the 80 cents one - it'll hardly get used after all, probably just for a while out on the balcone to show off in front of the rug beatin' signoras who surely have the 4 euro version.

I used to have one of those! You don't have a 'rug beater?' *GASP*
That's ok, I don't either! ;)
I haven't got a rug beater, no. Make me feel bad why don't you.
;)
It looks like fairyfloss! (cotton candy, I think, in American - not sure what you call it in the UK!) What a shame it's a duster? So what are it's magic properties?
For ages I've been woken up in the morning by kind of a "whump, whump" sound outside my bedroom window. Couldn't figure it out - but then I saw a few days ago- it's a woman shaking out (and possibly beating) a rug in the window across the canyon from me. But she does this EVERY day - must be one dirty rug. Or do you think she rotates rugs to shake/beat at 7am?
I'm proud of myself for mopping the floors once every two weeks and not having dishes piled in the sink. I'm simply not in their league!
Rug beating really shouldn't be done so early. There's always someone beating rugs on a morning here. I'm not sure if they have a rotation system or not. I wonder.
Ps Fairy floss is candy floss in UK-speak.
Woohoo! Magic duster! If only it would get up and dust the place while you watch--now that would be some magic ;)
Yeah Sognatrice, I was kind of hoping for some of that kind of magic, but..nothing :(
This post cracked me up. My mom was/is a hard core clean freak, unfortunately some of it is rubbing off on me.
I too would have been excited to purchase such an item.
Nyc/Caribbean ragazza, you are your mother's daughter :D
My mother is a cleaning pro too, she'll be delighted when I tell her about my new duster.
I think I need one of those piumini magici, the dust rags I use aren't nearly as cheery. We have a rug beater but it only gets used when my husband's aunt comes over to borrow it. We should just let her have it- there's no way I am ever going out on one of the balconies to beat a rug. Isn't that what vacuum cleaners are for?
Ooh, I have one of them too, but yours is prettier than mine. Mine's just yellow and I think it cost about the same. It's much better than having to take everything off the shelves to dust them. But, I draw the line at beating rugs. :)
KC you're right, you should just hand the rug beater over. IMO a vacuum cleaner is just as good, but maybe some would argue...
MB, thanks! I'm sure you're duster is just as nice :)
It's only TRULY magic when it will get up and dust by itself when you are lying on the sofa sleeping/chilling/watching tv etc.
