In Italian they're called fichi d'india. Anyone know the name in English? I just did a quick Google and found "Cactus fruit", but I think there's another name used.

Beach
With August over I decided it was safe to hit the beach so off we went to Acciaroli which can be found going further south, after Salerno. It has the all important Bandiera Blue which means the sea is just gorgeous. It wasn't too busy at all, mainly families with young kids. A few photos:

There are many names for it but it is more commonly known as "Cactus Pear". Also tuna and Indian fig. Maybe you recognize it as "prickly pear".
For the Brits we call them prickly pears. I absolutely adore them. I have just returned from Sicily (my husband hails from there)and managed to sample a few. They are at their best in September.
I'm wishing I'd tasted one now. So high up on the cactus though it might not have been such a good idea :)
I believe in the USA we call them prickly pears, too.

Yes, they are called Prickly pears but are not delicious! We have them in Australia like anon said, so many of them, and in Sicily last year the countryside was full of them. I do not like them though...but I am a little fussy when it comes to eating.
Looks like we had the same idea about hitting the beach! The sea looks so clear and beautiful in your photos.
We love 'pricky pears' in this house, Julian grew up with them growing everywhere in Malta and they were one of the first things we planted here.
