For anyone waiting for the metro.
It's not going to pass anytime soon. A new metro station has been trying to open in Naples from since I can remember. It must be for over five years now. I'm sure there were some bureaucratic hurdles especially at the start otherwise it wouldn't be Italy. Then they discovered some Roman ruins so the project stopped. These were discovered well over a year ago. The latest is that last week a second world war bomb was found where they were working. So things have slowed down again. They discovered this during the day last week and in the night they tried to evacuate people in the near by hotels. Many of the guests, understandably so, decided to stay, reasoning that if the bomb hadn't exploded since the second world war it was unlikely that it would explode before breakfast. In fact, they're going to do a controlled explosion today so the area has to be evacuated. I'm sure there'll still be the odd rebel Vespa rider about though.
Buona Domenica.

You know I'm surprised that no one made it "disappear" yet. One of my friends had a 'crazy' zio who had a WWII bomb as his door stop of his little farm hut. When I explained to him that it was a really bad idea he looked at me and said 'well whenever God wants me.'
As for that Metro -I remember in 99 they said it would only take a year -if only I would age at their rate I'd still be 12! (ok, maybe a little older)
I think that the construction was there when we visited in 1998. A few years later we were in Naples and mentioned to someone at Cafe Medina that it didn't look like much work has gotten done on the Metro and his reply was that the trade unions need to stretch the job out q bit. Last July the same guy said they have stopped because of the roman ruins. Is the picture from the corner of Via Medina.
Alex - a bomb on the doorstep?! That's scarey!
Gil, that sounds about right that the trade unions had to stretch the job out. I took the photo from outside the castle, so kind of opposite to the corner of Via Medina.
They'll be building that Metro station for years. Once the bomb is cleared you know they will dig deeper only to find more ancient ruins...and who knows what else they will find.
And as for the rubbish in Naples - che sciffo! I am coming up to Napoli next week so will get to see (or should I say smell?) the rubbish myself.
Leanne, don't worry too much about the rubbish problem if you're just coming to visit. The trash has been moved from the central streets that I've seen. Not sure where it's been moved to :S
That Metro isn't done! I don't believe it. Maybe they should give up it and just use it as a tourist attraction.
why rush it? maybe they put all the trash in the metro tunnels.
A WWII bomb as a door stop? I love his response to your concern. ha
